How to get an Indian visa from London
People living in the UK who want to visit India and require a visa must apply online. (Visage/Stockbyte/Getty Images)

The issuing of Indian visas in the UK was outsourced in May 2008 to a company called VF Services UK Limited. All visa applications, including requests for tourist and business visas, must be made online and the necessary documents sent to one of eight Visa Application Centres (VAC), the largest of which is in London. If you are applying via post rather than in person then you must select “UK-London” as the “Indian Mission” on the online form. As of June 2013, a six month tourist visa for UK citizens cost £92.20, including a £10.20 processing fee.

  1. 1

Choose which category of Indian visa best applies to your visit and complete the relevant online application form on the website of VF Services UK Limited. Print out a couple of copies of this application form as you need to send one signed copy to the VAC.

  2. 2

Use your debit or credit card to pay the relevant fee that varies according to the type and length of visa. You can also pay by Postal Order or Bank Draft made payable to “VF Services UK Ltd" by submitting in with your documents.

  3. 3

Locate a photo booth that takes colour passport size photos. There are strict specifications that must be adhered too, including the size of the photo, background and facial expression.

  4. 4

Schedule an appointment online at your nearest VAC if you wish to apply in person. You can cancel or reschedule the appointment online by entering your passport number, web reference number and surname.

  5. 5

Post your signed application form and supporting documents - which vary according to the type of visa you require - to your nearest VAC. If you apply in person you will need to take all the paperwork with you to your appointment.

  6. 6

Arrange for the return of your passport by collecting it from the VAC where you applied or via courier or Royal Mail. If you choose to receive the passport via courier or post then you will need to pay additional charges, which are charged per passport.

  7. 7

Check your visa carefully to ensure it is the category you requested and all your personal information, such as name, date of birth and nationality, is correct. If any details are wrong contact the VAC immediately so the visa can be reissued.

Tips and warnings

  • Tourists wishing to return to India after a recent visit are advised to wait two months before applying for a new tourist visa.
