The farther you get from a Wi-Fi signal, the weaker it becomes. A repeater antenna relays the Wi-Fi signal so you can pick it up at a greater distance from the transmitter.

A repeater antenna contains a receiver and a transmitter so that it can pick up and relay a Wi-Fi signal. PVC is cheap and easy to work with; it is also waterproof, meaning that if you seal the housing properly you can position the antenna outside.

A relay antenna allows you greater freedom when working online. For example, you may wish to work outdoors in the yard or a nearby park. Building a homemade antenna is cheaper than buying a commercial one.

A homemade antenna may be cheap, but it does represent a significant outlay in terms of materials and time. It may be less reliable than a commercial unit. Extending your wireless signal means that more people can pick it up, including potential hackers; protect your system with wireless security.
