Gyms are places where people go to get in shape or maintain good physical health. While gym equipment provided by a fitness club is available for gym-goers to use, the equipment can cause health and safety hazards if proper precautions are not taken.
Performing a risk analysis of gym equipment is an effective way to study the conspicuous and inconspicuous hazards that pervade. Once a risk assessment is conducted, precautionary measures can be instituted by the club to ensure gym-goers are not in danger when they use the equipment.
Certain federal regulations apply to community gyms as established by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). OSHA sets health and safety standards to ensure the public is safe from things such as the spread of infectious diseases, contamination and accidental injuries. Accordingly, gym equipment must be analysed to determine if OSHA regulations are being followed. For instance, sanitising and disinfecting gym equipment (and keeping sanitation records on premises) ensures exposure to germs are minimised.
Risk surveyors must analyse the condition of gym equipment to determine how safe it is to use. Equipment that is rusty or has a significant amount of wear and tear may not be deemed safe, and will need to be repaired or replaced.
