The two-car garage has changed in size since its popularity began in the 1940s. The garage space was not used as much for parking two cars inside as it was for needed storage.
Dimensions of a Two-Car Garage
An average two-car garage measures 20-by-20 feet or 400 square feet. Newer vehicles, however, like SUVs, vans and trucks, have a difficult time parking side by side in this amount of space.
Many architects and builders today are suggesting two-car garages that measure 24-by-24 feet, or 576 square feet, to meet the size of larger vehicles. These dimensions are beginning to replace the typical 20-by-20-foot size when looking at garage kits and hiring builders.
Guidelines and Custom Garages
There are no hard guidelines set by zoning or government entities on the size of a garage. Different subdivisions may have a set standard for garage measurements to stay within the design and structure of existing homes. Many homeowners are electing to go two feet longer, 24-by-26 feet, or 624 square feet, to have extra storage space, or they are choosing a three-car garage.
