Is desiccated liver safe?
Dessicated liver supplements have benefits and cautions (cod liver capsules image by Martin Garnham from

Desiccated liver is a nutrient-rich supplement produced from the liver of an animal, usually a cow. Dessicated liver or liver extract is taken by those wishing to increase strength or who use the supplement to build up their energy.

Desiccated liver usually comes in a pill form. While this supplement used to be very popular, many today have not heard of this supplement derived from the nutrient rich liver of cattle.

Those who make and take dessicated liver, claim the extract promotes better liver function in humans and decreases liver damage as it regenerates liver tissue. Dessicated liver, considered a detoxification product, has been used in poisoning situations and even to help those with chemical addiction to recover.

Builds Up

Bodybuilders use dessicated liver to enhance muscle mass as well as increase physical endurance and stamina. Those with allergies and diseases such as chronic fatigue syndrome take it to decrease the sense of exhaustion.

Many have used this product without harm for years. However, there are some cautions. There are concerns about the health of the supplement unless the original source has been verified as healthy. Because dessicated liver has high concentrations of iron, those with sensitivity to iron or who already have iron-rich blood, should not take the extract. Breastfeeding women should also use caution in taking dessicated liver.
