History

People have used barley grass as medicine since ancient times. Egyptians used it as a laxative, and to heal burns and fractures. Greeks included the plant in rituals to celebrate Demeter, goddess of agriculture, also called Barley Mother. In Rome, gladiators ate barley before combat to increase their stamina, according to Herbal Extracts Plus' website.

Barley grass has been a part of traditional Chinese medicine for at least 1,800 years, according to the Botanical website.

Green Foods founder Dr. Yoshihide Hagiwara first developed Green Magma in 1969, says the company's website.

Products and Ingredients

Green Magma is available in powder, sachet and tablet formats. According to the manufacturers, it contains powdered juice from organic young barley grass, organic maltodextrin (a carbohydrate) and organic brown rice. An improved version of the product, called Green Magma Plus, also contains mixed vegetable extracts, chicory root, acerola, soy lecithin, bee products, mixed fruit extracts, herbal extracts, green algae (ppirulina, chlorella), probiotic cultures (L. bifidus, L. acidophilus, L. plantarum), vitamin E and enzymes.

Green Magma products do not contain added sugar, salt, colourings, animal products, gluten, soy, wheat or yeast, according to Green Foods.

Components

Green Magma is rich in many vitamins (C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, and B12), which are powerful antioxidants, minerals (potassium, calcium, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, manganese, zinc and copper), proteins, amino-acids, active enzymes and chlorophyll.

According to Tea For Healing's website, vitamins keep the normal metabolic functioning of the body, and minerals activate enzymes, which promote a better digestive process. Chlorophyll has detoxifying, anti-inflammatory, deodorising and antibacterial actions.

Benefits

Green Magma has several health benefits, including the restoration of the acid-alkaline balance of the body. According to Green Foods, high body acidity can cause allergy, chronic fatigue, weight gain, premature ageing and immune deficiency.

Chlorophyll promotes a good digestion process, and keeps the intestinal flora active and balanced, avoiding flatulence, heartburn, nausea, gastritis and duodenal ulcers, according to Herbal Extracts Plus.

Barley grass has also hypocholesteromic properties (to reduce cholesterol). The substance hordenine stimulates blood circulation, thus preventing arteriosclerosis, stroke and heart attack, according to Herbal Extracts Plus's website.

Warnings

Do not use food supplements as a substitute for medicines. It is also advisable to talk to a doctor before taking Green Magma.

Barley grass may stop lactation in nursing mothers, so it is not recommended while breastfeeding or pregnant, according to Herbal Extracts Plus.
