What Are the Advantages or Disadvantages of Wide Tires?

Updated June 18, 2018

Most cars have a specific size tire that the car is optimally suited for. However, you may be able to choose wider tires that will fit your car.

Stopping Distance

Wider tires help your car stop in a shorter distance in both wet and dry road conditions.

Handling

In addition to a shorter braking distance, wider tires offer better handling while driving than narrower tires.

Traction in Snow

According to Motor Trend, wide tires do not perform as well as narrow tires in deep snow because the narrow tires cut through the snow to the road surface more easily.

Aquaplaning

According to Motor Authority, you will start to aquaplane at lower speeds with wide tires than you will with narrow tires.

Considerations

According to Motor Authority, using narrower tires results in a quieter, more comfortable ride when compared to wide tires.
