Academic registrar job description

An academic registrar oversees and directs all registration activities for a college, university or conservatory. Creating registration schedules and implementing procedures, she ensures that prospective students enter the school and graduates matriculate in an orderly and efficient manner. She typically works in tandem with the deans of each academic area of her institution.

Job Responsibilities

An academic registrar recruits and manages the entire staff of the registration and student records departments of a higher learning institution. He and his team coordinate and administer all student records, new semesters/quarter registrations and all matriculation functions. Additionally, graduate transcripts and accreditation certifications fall under his watch. Liaising with the deans of each academic department, he assists in the development of academic course requirements, establishing and implementing guidelines for meeting them. As a student prepares to graduate, the academic registrar ensures that all coursework, credit requirements and fiscal responsibilities have been met. He also makes recommendations regarding technological improvements to his organisation’s record keeping systems. Additionally, his department is responsible for verifying the matriculation of students to their potential employers.

Qualitative Requirements

A good academic registrar must be extremely honest. Job opportunities, money and personal dignity may all be affected by successfully graduating from college. Many may try to obtain matriculation dishonestly. The academic registrar must always maintain the integrity of her office. She must also possess excellent interpersonal skills, as she will be required to tactfully communicate negative information to others. Verbal and written communication skills are also important, as all policies and procedures will be created and implemented from the office of the academic registrar.

Educational Requirements

To obtain employment as an academic registrar, the successful candidate must possess a master’s degree within academic administration, education services or a related field of study. He must also possess at least eight-plus years of supervisory experience within an institution of similar size to that in which he is applying. Additionally, exposure to and proficiency with academic recordkeeping and registration computer software and best practices are a must.

The job outlook for education administrators is expected to grow by 12 per cent between 2006 and 2016. The median annual salary of a registrar working in the United States of America in 2009 is 71,210.
