Liquid Gold is a brand of wood cleaning and preserving products made by Scott's Liquid Gold. The American company, established in 1954, is primarily known for Liquid Gold consumer products. These products are easy to use and provide a one-product clean and polish treatment on wood furniture. The simple application process makes Liquid Gold a popular wood beautifier.

Significance

The popularity of Liquid Gold is due to its visible cleaning and restorative results. The fast cleaning effect in these products is usually due to a mild naphtha solution. VM&P Naphtha is a common organic solvent used for wood refinishing. It helps remove wax, grease and other grime. The organic oils in Liquid Gold products are quickly absorbed in the wood. This adds moisture to wood and helps prevent cracking. The oils smooth out colour damage to sun-bleached or faded wood. They also blend scratches into the wood.

Types

The primary product is the Liquid Gold Wood Cleaner and Preservative aerosol. This product is the foundation for other wood care products. It has been developed into a non-aerosol pourable solution that can be sponged on surfaces. The company used the same formula to develop pre-moistened wipes for touch-up dusting and cleaning. Liquid Gold expanded into cleaners such as ready to use and concentrate products for large surfaces including wood floors and cabinets.

Features

The oils prolong the life of the wood by replacing moisture and removing dirt. The solvent helps remove existing wax build up that can make a wood finish appear hazy. Liquid Gold is simple to use because it is sprayed on wood and wiped off with no rinsing. It contains no wax and therefore needs no polishing. The products are also used on non-wood surfaces such as vinyl, leather, linoleum, stainless steel, chrome and fibreglass. Because the products have a solvent and oil, they are often used to clean and protect garden tools.

Considerations

While Liquid Gold is designed for most finished wood surfaces, it is not suitable for use on paste wax or polyurethane finished wood. Liquid Gold cannot penetrate these finishes to reach the wood. In some instances Liquid Gold makes wood look much darker than before it was applied. The appearance will gradually lighten. Liquid Gold is not recommended for bleached or laminated surfaces as it can alter the original appearance. When used on wood frame furniture, care must be taken to keep Liquid Gold off fabric sections as it can stain fabric.

Warning

Due to the petroleum distillate ingredients, Liquid Gold should only be used in a well-ventilated area. If it is used for an extended period of time, the company recommends the use of protective gloves. If the cleaner is accidentally sprayed in eyes, flush them with water and contact a physician. Children should not use the product.
