Treat the Cause of the Sore Throat

A sore throat is often caused by drainage down the back of the throat. Congestion can be treated naturally during pregnancy by using hot steam in a bathroom to clear congestion, placing a warm, wet washcloth over the nose, or using a nasal rinse found in most drugstores. Some over-the-counter cold medications are safe to be used during pregnancy. An expectant mother should check with her doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication.

Treat a Sore Throat Naturally

Natural sore throat treatments are the safest option during pregnancy. An expectant mother can try gargling saltwater to soothe a sore throat. Water mixed with honey and lemon and heated until warm can be help alleviate some of the pain associated with a sore throat. A spoonful of straight honey can offer instant, temporary relief for a sore throat and can also help treat a cough if it is present at the same time. Orange juice provides plenty of vitamin C to help an expectant mother get over a sore throat faster and can also offer temporary relief from the pain of a sore throat.

Medication Safe to Take During Pregnancy

If natural treatments do not help to relieve the pain of a sore throat during pregnancy, there are medication available to take that are safe for expectant mothers. The American Pregnancy Association has created a list of medication ingredients safe for pregnant mothers (see References section below). While the list is a good guide for expectant mothers, it is always best to discuss medications with your doctor before taking them. Some relatively safe medications include acetaminophen to treat the pain of a sore throat, VapoRub to treat the related congestion with a sore throat, and most cough drops.
