Humidity is the result of heat and moisture in the air. The resulting muggy sensation can make it harder to breathe comfortably. Extreme indoor humidity can damage books and magazines as well as wallpaper, while fostering an environment for the growth of mould. If you do not own or want to avoid the expense of buying a dehumidifier, try other techniques for lowering the moisture content of a room.
Turn down the thermostat to lower the room temperature. Switch the central heating and cooling system to air conditioning, if available, or turn on a window air conditioner.
Turn on electric fans to circulate air in the room. Open the door to the room and position a fan so it points outward to draw out humidity.
Pour rock salt into a metal pan and set the pan in a corner. The salt naturally absorbs moisture to dehumidify the room. Replace with fresh salt every three to four days or as necessary if you notice the humidity starting to rise again, indicating that the rock salt has absorbed as much water as possible.
