A grandmother clock is similar to a grandfather clock in all ways except size. A typical grandmother clock has a case that is approximately 6 feet tall, whereas a grandfather clock towers from 6 ½ feet to over 8 feet tall. Grandmother clocks are a single or triple movement clock either that play one melody or have a choice of three melodies. Chimes on a grandmother clock may be silenced entirely or only at nighttime with the night silencing option.

Turn the chime selection lever to "Chime-Silent" position on a single movement clock. The chime selection lever is on the clock face near the number 3. A single movement clock plays one melody or gongs on the hour. This action prevents a single movement grandmother clock from chiming entirely.

Turn the selection lever to "Silent" on a triple movement clock near the number 9. Triple movement clocks play three different tunes that are selected on the right side of the clock face near the number 3. The chimes are silenced on the left of the clock face. This action prevents a triple movement grandmother clock from chiming at any time.

Turn the automatic night silencing option on a single or triple movement clock near the number 9 to "Night Off" to silence the chimes at night. The clock will not strike from 10:15 p.m. to 7 a.m. so as not to wake anyone sleeping.

WARNING

Do not turn the chimes off while the clock is in the process of chiming. This can damage the clock movement. Howard Miller clocks advises to activate or inactivate chimes within a 10-minute window after the hour, quarter-hour, or half-hour chime to prevent clock damage.
