How to tell if a car has keyless entry

Updated November 22, 2016

Keyless entry allows you to lock and unlock all your car doors and hatch or boot with a remote that is attached to, or part of, your ignition key. When a car has keyless entry capabilities, it usually also has power windows and door locks. Know where to look to find out if your car is capable of remote entry so that you can purchase or fix a key fob to take advantage of the feature.

  1. Look to see if you have a remote. The remote is usually on the same key chain as your key or part of the key itself. It should feature a lock and unlock button, usually named so or pictured with what looks like a padlock in the open or closed position.

  2. Stand close to your car and press the unlock or lock button. If the remote works, you'll hear the doors lock or unlock. If it does not work, you may need to replace the battery. Take the key remote to a same-make dealership or electronics store that sells watch batteries. A representative can replace the battery for you.

  3. If you don't have a remote, open your driver's side door and look next to the handle or power window controls. You may not have power windows but still have power locks with remote capabilities. The power lock button inside the car should show the same picture of a key or lock symbol. The controls are on one button that you can press at the top or the bottom.

  4. Press the button in either direction. If all locks engage or unlock at once, you can purchase a remote to use for keyless entry.

  5. Tip

Call a same-make dealership with your vehicle identification number (VIN) to confirm keyless entry capabilities or to find out if you can purchase a keyless entry remote. You can find your VIN on an insurance card or on your car title.
