Homemade odor absorber

Updated February 21, 2017

Your home may be clean, but a strong odour caused by food, cigarette smoke or a similar odour will immediately make it smell as if your home has not been cleaned in ages. Whether you have company coming over soon or simply cannot stand the odour left behind in your home, you are in need of an odour absorber to eliminate unpleasant smells. When this happens, forget the expensive commercial air fresheners and instead make a homemade odour absorber.

  1. Sprinkle a light coating of baking soda over carpets if the odour is throughout the entire room. Let the soda sit for about two hours or overnight, if possible, then vacuum the carpet clean.

  2. Place bowls of baking soda throughout the home, using about one-half cup of baking soda in each bowl. The natural absorbing powder will collect and remove the odour in the air.

  3. Pour 1/2 cup of vinegar into bowls as well and place throughout the home for another powerful odour absorber.

  4. Pour white vinegar into a spray bottle and spray throughout the home, onto carpeting and upholstery. The area will smell of vinegar briefly but will dissipate, taking the foul odour with it.
