How to make numbness in your mouth go away

Numbness in the mouth after seeing the dentist is annoying and embarrassing. It makes drinking, eating or talking difficult and numbness may last up to three to five hours after leaving the dentist depending on how many shots of local anaesthesia was given. There are ways to shorten numbness in the mouth.

  1. Massage the area around your mouth. Gently massage your lip and the side of your jaw, wherever you feel numb. Do not rub vigorously as you may cause damage to the numbed area of your face since you cannot feel how hard you are rubbing. Massage promotes blood flow and circulation into the numbed areas. Increased blood flow reduces the time the mouth is numb.

  2. Ask your dentist about vasodilators. Vasodilators are injected into the same area as the local anaesthesia after the dental procedure is over. The vasodilators are what is called a reversal agent in that it dilates blood vessels reversing the numbing affect. The numbness wears off in about half the time than allowing it to go away naturally.

  3. Eat ice cream, a smoothie or yoghurt. The chewing action stimulates blood flow allowing numbness to wear off faster. Eat slowly and carefully so as not to choke on the food. Eating something cold is safer than eating something hot as with being numb you may burn your mouth or lip.

  4. Tip

    Talk to your dentist about how to recover from numbness of the mouth faster. Sometimes he may recommend not forcing the numbness to leave any faster. Doing so may result in feeling pain from the dental procedure, especially if extensive work was done.
