Hi, I'm Tim Gipson. I'm going to talk to you about how to work your fire place damper. Now, with most of your modern inserts, such as this, and in your homes, that's either a regular fire place, or a gas log fire place, your damper will be located right here at the mid point top of your fire place. And most of the inserts that are designed like this, have a damper that, when it's, when the handle's over to the left, it's fully closed, and that would be the position that you would keep that damper in whenever you're not using your fire place. If you move it to the right, then it is fully open. So again, these insert type of fire places have a damper, and what this is, it basically is a cover, or a valve that closes, or opens to, for, for the chimney flue that's up underneath here. And again, it's either fully open, or fully closed. So, and to double check the position, you can use either a lighter, or use a flashlight, and you can look up underneath, and it's very easy to see whether that damper is open. So in this case, I can check it and know that when this is to the right, it's fully open, and when it's to the left, it's fully closed. Now, it's very important that, even in a gas log fire place, or any type of fire place, this is metal, so this becomes very hot, so you always want to make sure that you let your fire place cool down before you come and you close this damper, or touch that. It can cause some serious burns on your hand, or you want to make sure that use an oven mitt when ever you do anything with that damper. So, I'm Tim Gipson, and that's how to open and close your fire place damper.
