"We're going to talk about the effects that gum has on cavities and gum disease. Many patients inquire about whether or not chewing gum can have any sort of affect on cavities and gum disease. The good news is, they have actually found that there are new gums out there, new chewing gums, that are actually helping prevent cavities. And it does that a couple different ways. But first of all, when you're chewing gum, what you're doing is, when you're biting down on the gum you're stimulating your saliva glands to stimulate saliva. Saliva is something that's produced in our mouth naturally to help protect, cleanse and lubricate the teeth. So the more that you chew, the more saliva that you generate. And we know that the more saliva you generate, the more that you can buffer the...the mouth to prevent cavities. One of the other things that we've seen is there is a new ingredient out called xylitol, and xylitol is a sugar that's found in many different gums and a lot of sweetening agents nowadays that actually helps...it's been found that it actually fights and treats cavities. It alone will not fix the situation, but oftentimes we know that it will prevent the onset of cavities. It because of that there are multiple bubble gums out there now, such as Trident. Trident, for example has incorporated xylitol in almost all of their chewing gum. And we know again with the xylitol, the xylitol can help prevent cavities and also keep the mouth lubricated and protect the teeth as well as the gums. While the chewing gum doesn't really do anything for gum disease, again, it does stimulate saliva, and we know that saliva will help protect the mouth and lubricate it and ensure that we minimize any sort of problems that we see."
