Transmission fluid is important because it lubricates all of the moving parts inside the transmission. According to the AA 1 Car website it also serves as a coolant and transmits power from the engine to the transmission. T4 transmission fluid is specifically designed for use in all Toyota and Lexus vehicles. If the wrong fluid is used in a vehicle, the transmission can experience problems or become damaged.

T4 Transmission Fluid

T4 transmission fluid is a current classification of AFT that is designed for all Toyota and Lexus vehicles. Art's Automotive website explains that although older Toyota vehicles used types T, TII and TIII transmission fluid, the T4 was designed to replace them. Although some owner's manuals claim that transmission fluid does not ever need to be changed, it is recommended to change the fluid every 15,000 miles in order to keep the vehicle operating correctly. The T4 transmission fluid is a high-quality ATF that can be used for Toyota and Lexus vehicles. No other type of ATF should be used, even if it is less expensive, because it will not meet the needs of Toyota and Lexus vehicles.

Toyota's World Standard Automatic Transmission Fluid (WS ATF)

The AA 1 Cars website explains that Toyota's WS AFT is one of the most current transmission fluids on the market today. The WS AFT was designed specifically for Toyota vehicles from 2003 through the present. The complex fluid compound was designed to meet the need of specific newer Toyota vehicles. The transmission in a car determines what fluid is needed. The WS AFT was designed to meet the needs of the Tundra, Prius, Land Rover, 4Runner, Tacoma, Avalon and Highlander. For these specific vehicles, the WS AFT is the fluid that is required for them to function effectively.

Dexron III Transmission Fluid

Art's Automotive website explains that Dexron III AFT was also designed to replace the older versions of transmission fluid for Toyota and Lexus vehicles. It can be used in any vehicle that originally used the older T, TII and TIII transmission fluids. Although the Dexron III was originally produced for GM vehicles, Japanese car brands (such as Toyota and Lexus) started using it because of its low viscosity and high performance. Although Dexron III and T4 transmission fluids can be used alternately on vehicles, the Dexron III ATF is not appropriate for vehicles that use the WS AFT. It is important that car owners only use the specific type or types of transmission fluid that are listed in the owner's manual.
