Event planners have demanding responsibilities and enjoy great rewards. People in this profession organise parties, weddings, and other memorable occasions. They work closely with clients and vendors to help special events run smoothly. Event planners must have skills in communication and organisation to succeed in this challenging field. In 2008, the median salary of a meeting and convention planner was £36,790, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. But the success of a special event and making clients happy is the true reward for an event planner.

Event planners must have excellent interpersonal communication skills. Both verbal and written communication are necessary for successful event planning. Event planners deal with confidential contracts, from tablecloth rentals to music entertainment. It is important to keep this information organised and readily available. Also, the event planner may be physically responsible for holding on to the rented tablecloths, centrepieces, and place settings. Clients will appreciate their event planner for being organised and dependable.

Computer Savvy

Event planners must have computer skills. It is important to master the skills of e-mail and word processing programs. Using computer programs like QuickBooks or Microsoft Excel to manage bills and payments is also important for a successful business. Event planners that represent themselves may not be able to afford a secretary or office manager at first. The event planner should know how to create professionally typed documents and client contracts.
