Flag of India

Children can make the national India flag with construction paper to celebrate Republic Day. Give children a sheet of green construction paper and have them place it horizontally on their workspace. This will be the flag’s base. Then give them a strip of saffron or orange and a strip of white construction paper. Each strip should be a third of the green paper when placed on the paper horizontally. Have them glue the strips onto the green paper. The orange strip should be placed at the top of the green paper and the white strip should be glued in the middle of the green construction paper below the orange paper. Green will be the bottom colour of the flag. For the flag’s blue wheel design, the image can be drawn in the centre of the white strip.

Republic Day Parade

Children will have fun participating in a Republic Day parade. Give them Indian instruments, such as a harmonium and tabla, or other instruments, like drums, cymbals, recorders or triangles, and let them pretend to be a military band. Some children can pretend to be soldiers. Others can carry handcrafted flags. Dress some children in traditional attire representing various states of India. Some children can make parade floats by decorating wagons. They can march down a street, around the neighbourhood, in a park or around a building. Make sure to invite guests to watch the parade.

Republic Day Festival

Children can participate in a Republic Day Festival. They can dress in traditional Indian attire. If girls don't own saris, drape colourful fabric around their bodies to imitate the saris worn by female Indians. Boys can wear loose fitting drawstring-trousers and kurtas, long knee-length shirts. Also, children can perform Indian music and traditional dances, such as Kathakali and Kuchipudi dances. Some children may want to prepare Indian dishes, such as spicy french toast or minced lamb meatballs, to share. Indian music should be played. Children can also set up booths displaying information about India and Republic Day. If possible, adults can help children organise the festival.
