Physical education classes are required for students in kindergarten through high school. This class is dedicated to keeping students active and promoting healthy lifestyle choices through hands-on activities and theoretical coursework. Due to the often large size of these classes, physical education teachers are aided by teacher assistants. While the specific duties of a physical education (PE) teacher's assistant may vary from institution-to-institution, several skills and attributes are universal.

A physical education teaching assistant must hold strong organizational skills as she is responsible for not only maintaining order within the class, but also ensuring all equipment is accounted for. Commonly, a physical education teaching assistant will review the daily lesson plans with the teacher and gather all necessary equipment from storage. After the equipment is gathered, the teaching assistant must keep track of the equipment and ensure all items used during class are returned to their proper place. Teaching assistants may be required to perform various tasks throughout the day, thus organizational skills will help ensure all required tasks are properly carried out.


Occasionally, a physical education teaching assistant may be required to perform various clerical duties. These duties may include ordering additional supplies, checking the condition of equipment and scheduling repairs for damaged equipment. Another common duty for a physical education teaching assistant is to compile reports and maintain attendance records. Administrative skills will be utilised on a daily basis for this profession to ensure equipment is readily available and all record keeping is accurately performed.


Physical education teaching assistants are responsible for implementing lesson plans created by the PE teacher. Depending on the school, a physical education class may have numerous grades at one time, thus assistants must have strong communication skills to ensure all lesson plans are carried out. In the absence of the PE teacher, the assistant must inform the students how to perform a particular activity or lesson. An assistant is also responsible for watching students and communicating to the teacher if a particular student is struggling in an activity or showing problematic signs.
