Java developers must understand design concepts and patterns. Technical skills are not enough. If Java developers go beyond just being computer programmers, they must have analytical, research, writing and verbal skills. Java developers must be able to work and share knowledge with team members, but they must also be able to work independently.

The entry-level Sun certification for Java is Sun Certified Associate. Sun Certified Associate demands that developers understand the fundamentals of software project management or application development, using Java technology. The next level is Sun Certified Programmer, which is based on a set of foundational skills. Developers can then pursue advanced certifications, including Sun Certified Web Component Developer or Sun Certified Business Component.

Java Software Trainer

Java trainers must know the fundamentals of Java programming. Some job search websites, like FlexJobs, show that some of the skills that Java telecommuting trainers should have are knowing how to design and develop Java applications. They must develop training materials.

Although they can work primarily from home, Java trainers may have to travel to customers’ offices and conduct training sessions there. Trainers may also be able to create online Java training courses. They can do this from home.

Java trainers must have solid writing and presentation skills. Java trainers should have Bachelor of Science degrees in computer science or computer engineering. Some companies may not require that trainers be Sun certified; however, it is to their advantage to become certified because they can command more money. According to Indeed, the average salary for a Java software trainer is £53,950 per year.

Java Solutions Architect

Java Solutions Architects have both technical and business skills. Some of their qualifications include creating road maps for future projects. Java Solutions Architects also make sure that information technology (IT) effectively delivers processes, such as project management, enterprise architecture, software development life cycle and release management. Java Solution Architects must be Sun Certified in Java programming and have several years of experience as Java leaders, as well as application architects. In addition, companies may require they have a master’s degree in computer science or engineering. According to DirectDegree, the average salary for Java Solutions Architects is £63,700 per year, while for Senior Java Solutions Architects, it is £72,800 per year.
