Diversity is as important in the workplace as anywhere else. However, true diversity is much more than simply employing diverse races. A diverse workplace also includes ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, appearance and background. Benefits of such a workplace include: improved understanding of customers, increased productivity, a variety of viewpoints and spoken languages.

Other People Are Reading

Enhanced Understanding

Having people of varying cultures, backgrounds and languages working together can improve customer service. Their collective backgrounds and experiences make them more understanding of various lifestyles and better able to relate. Even body language can mean different things in different parts of the world. Without understanding other cultures and lifestyles, there is a greater risk of misunderstanding and even offending customers.

Fresh Perspectives

Employing a diverse team means having a variety of viewpoints. If you hired all middle-aged, suburban, white American men, you would have only the perspective of middle-aged suburban, white American men. However, if your team is instead comprised of European entry-level women, elderly men from Mexico, middle-aged African women and young men from Asia, you would have a team with varied experiences and perspectives that can only benefit a company.

Language Benefits

It is important to understand that not everyone can understand English. As of 2009, English is not even the dominant language, second to Chinese, according to ethnoconnect.com. This can change in any direction as well. Hiring native speakers to a variety of languages can increasingly benefit a business. It is equally important to hire employees who know sign language.
