The backyard barbecue is an essential part of a patio's design. When options for every budget are available, adjusting your backyard patio design to include a backyard barbecue is easy. Allow yourself plenty of time to complete the design before hosting a backyard event. Position the grill and other serving and cooking areas so that the host or chef can still interact with guests.

Outdoor Kitchen

The first thing to consider when planning a backyard barbecue is the grill that you plan to use. Barbecue grill islands are found in a large number of designs and sizes. A standard gas grill is an obvious choice. However, if the space is large enough, other appliances and furnishings can be added to the design. Some add-on options include a stove, grills, a sink, ample counter space for prepping food and serving guests, a small fridge, cabinets and outdoor pizza ovens. Construction material options for the islands include stone, stucco, brick and stainless steel.

Dining Furniture

Dining furniture can also be found in a plethora of options for materials, fabrics, styles, sizes, colours and cost. A standard backyard barbecue dining design is made up of a table surrounded with a few chairs. The table can be made from wicker, aluminium, iron, wood (such as teak and cedar), plastic and a range of laminate-top and glass-top tables. A barbecue island can also provide a bar area for dining when it is paired with a few stools. Add comfort and style to your patio with some comfortable chair and stool cushions. Where space is available, lounge chairs, patio swings, garden benches, accent chairs and folding chairs can be arranged as additional seating. Built-in tables and benches can be made from stone, wood, concrete or brick.

Extra Touches

There are plenty of extra add-on options to customise the backyard design. Consider adding a raised counter or outdoor bar; it can sit on the opposite side of the grill for a functional cookout social atmosphere. Also, an outdoor surround sound system is a nice feature for outdoor entertainment. Install an electric line near the grill station counter to allow the use of electrical appliances. Outdoor fireplaces or fire pits add a campfire feel to the cookout experience. Ambient lighting can create a welcoming atmosphere during nighttime entertaining; add some low-voltage lights and tiki torches. Awnings, umbrellas, gazebos, sail shades, arbors and trees are patio cover options.
