A rustic wall covering can be anything from old piece of wallpaper to a new piece of art made to look rustic. Carry the rustic theme throughout your entire room for a warm and comfy atmosphere. Whatever your preference and style, you can make an interesting decorative wall covering that works in any room.

Wallpaper and Paint

Find wallpaper and borders with an antique look, featuring motifs such as old ships or barns in various colours and patterns. Other good rustic wallpaper patterns include tree bark or anything with dark colours and patterns that look like stone or brick. The rustic look can be anything with an outdoor or nature theme.

Paint can give the same rustic style to a wall by using dark colours or patterns with creative sponging techniques or stencils. Combine paint with a rustic wallpaper border to create a warm ambience. Add some rustic wall decor, found at many home and discount stores, to finish the room. This might include a pinecone-patterned or other nature scene light switch cover, for instance.

Barn Wood

Barn wood makes a great wall covering and can be used in its natural form, splinters and all, or made into smooth, beautifully finished panelling. Many people like the extreme rustic look achieved by hanging unfinished barn wood; however, keep in mind that the smell of old animals and manure may have permeated into the wood, in which case finished panelling may be a better choice.

Barn wood can also be made into rustic picture frames, shelves and other wall coverings. You may want to try your skills by creating your own wall decor out of old barn wood. Use panels as a canvas for a painting.

Rugs, Tapestry and Cloth

Hanging a rustic rug or animal fur, such as bear or elk, can give your room a warm, rustic atmosphere. Old or new tapestries and quilt, decorative cloth or canvas can also add a rustic touch to any room. Stick to Earth tones and outdoor-related items to enhance the mood.

Accessories

Antiques or other rustic accessories can add an impressive touch to your rustic theme. Many stores, including major retail outlets such as Macys and Target carry rustic items. Choose from accessories including metal wall clocks, mirrors, wall hangings and rustic wall art. Hanging old advertising signs or antiques, such as sleds or old tools, is often seen in casual restaurants and can make an interesting addition to a rustic room as well as a great conversation piece.
