Economical ceramic tile has been a favourite of homeowners for decades. However, a continuous sea of ceramic tile tends to be a bit boring on its own. Next time, consider using decorative ceramic accents to make that tile project special. Not only beautiful and durable, ceramic tile accents go a long way to increase a home's value. Ceramic tile accents come in a variety of sizes, shapes, patterns and textures to suit every home.

Try ceramic listellos to break up a mass of solid-coloured field tiles. Listellos are long, rectangular accent tiles that often feature textures and patterns designed to complement surrounding tile work. Commonly used in bathrooms, listellos, placed end to end, provide a chair rail effect around the room. Other applications for listellos include banding along a kitchen backsplash and as a border on a ceramic tile floor.

Ceramic tile inserts can change an ordinary tile installation into an extraordinary design statement. Inserts typically come in 2-by-2-, 4-by-4- or 6-by-6-inch squares and often feature a raised decorative pattern. Choose a tile at least half the size of surrounding field tile squares. Go wild by randomly punctuating field tiles with inserts or map out a predetermined pattern. If you're working with a limited budget, substitute small, solid-coloured ceramic tiles for pricey inserts to save money. For added interest, turn the square inserts on the diagonal for a stylish diamond effect.

Ceramic trim tiles serve as moulding to conceal raw tile cuts or simply as a decorative cap along the final course of tile. This pencil-thin trim gracefully curves to create a finished edge similar to wood trim moulding. Half round ceramic tile trim can even be used to create a wainscoting effect, separating two fields of contrasting wall tile colours. Classic ceramic rope trim imparts simple elegance when paired with matching colour field tiles.

Wall Murals

Ceramic tile wall murals offer a creative alternative to plain wall surfaces in a kitchen, bath or foyer. Many tile manufacturers sell mural kits complete with decorative trim that serves as a frame. Tile wall murals can either be installed within field tiles or as stand-alone art. Kitchen backsplash murals typically feature bucolic landscapes and food motifs. Select from beach scenes, Roman ruins and fine art reproduction murals suitable for tub surrounds, patio walls and pool areas.

Floor Medallions

Add an exotic accent to tile or wood floors with an inlaid ceramic tile floor medallion. Decorative floor medallions consist of individual ceramic tile pieces that fit together like a puzzle to create an elaborate design. Due to the intricate nature of these decorative tile accents, most come attached to a mesh backing to facilitate the installation process.
