You can use common household items to make homemade cures for some tree diseases and fungi. These homemade cures require home mixing and vigilant use, but you'll save money and prevent damage by using the household ingredients for the well-being of your trees. In addition, prevention is always the best cure for any disease that may affect your trees. Making sure your tree has enough water and nutrients in the soil will keep the tree well equipped to fight off disease on its own.

Compost Tea

Make compost tea by adding a small amount of compost from your compost pile to water and aerating it for a few hours. This creates a liquid full of beneficial microbes that will enhance your tree's health significantly when you add it to the soil. You can also spray compost tea on foliage to increase the tree's immunity. This is especially effective in the prevention and cure of blight. There is no limit to the amount or frequency with which you should apply compost tea to the soil or the foliage of a tree. It can only help.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is effective against a number of diseases that regularly threaten trees, including powdery mildew, rut and black spot. Make an apple cider vinegar concoction by diluting the vinegar into water at a ratio of 1 tbsp to 1 qt. Apply this mixture to the foliage of the tree with a sprayer in the morning or the evening so that the liquid on the leaves does not burn up the foliage in the mid day sun. Apply the vinegar to the tree once or twice a day until symptoms disappear.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide is of great use in preventing root rot and other root-based diseases. When added to the soil around plants, hydrogen peroxide solution helps create oxygen pockets in over-compacted or over-watered soil, enabling the plant to breathe, retain nutrients and combat malignant fungi and disease. Use a mixture of 2 tsp hydrogen peroxide to 1 gallon of water, and add the blend into the soil while watering the tree.

Baking Soda

Baking soda has known fungicidal properties, and you can use it as a general fungicide for your trees. It can combat leaf blight, rust, blackspot and especially powdery mildew. Combine a mixture of 1 tbsp of baking soda to 1 gallon of water, along with a touch of dishwashing soap to help the mixture stick to the leaves of your tree. Shake the mixture thoroughly and regularly agitate it to keep the baking soda and water from separating. As a preventive measure or to combat disease, apply a thorough coating of the mixture to the tree foliage once a week until signs of disease have stopped spreading.
