A forklift is used on construction sites and in warehouses to move heavy loads from one place to another. There are a number of health and safety risks involved when operating a forklift, which is why it is very important for a daily check and inspection to be carried out on the vehicle. If this is not done, and the forklift falls into disrepair, it could malfunction, potentially causing great harm and even fatalities.
Check the floor underneath and around the forklift to identify whether there are any oil or fluid leaks from the engine. Inspect the bodywork of the forklift for any signs of damage, and to make sure that moving parts are well lubricated. Check all bolts to ensure that they are not loose and are in good condition.
Look at each of the wheels, inspecting the tires for damage or worn areas, and make sure that the wheel nuts are securely fastened. Check the pressure of the tires to ensure they are inflated to correct pressures, neither too high or too low.
Inspect all instruments inside the cab of the vehicle to make sure that they are in good working order. Check whether the horn and alarms work; these are important functions for the forklift to have and it is vital that they are working correctly. Consult the handbook or a technician if any warning lights are displayed on the dashboard of the vehicle.
Check the seat belt for any damage, and push on each of the foot pedals to make sure they do not feel spongy, which would indicate a leak within the hydraulic system.
Make sure that all fluids, such as fuel, oil and brake fluid, are at the correct levels. Inspect the battery for any signs of corrosion or damage; make sure that you are wearing protective clothing such as eye protection and gloves as you do this, as battery acid can cause damage to your skin.
Keep a Record
Sign your checklist and keep a record of it for future reference. If there is an accident or incident, health and safety personnel are going to want proof that the vehicle was in good working order. Providing this evidence will ensure that you can prove that this is the case.
