Not only do solar powered fans save you the inconvenience of constantly changing batteries when you are carrying out experiments away from a main power source, they are also much greener than conventional supplies. Solar energy is a renewable source of energy; therefore, it saves the planet and also saves you money on batteries and energy bills. In addition, solar powered fans are surprisingly powerful and extremely effective in science projects and experiments.

Solar Technology International: Perspex Desk Fan

This solar powered fan is ideal for science projects in which a continual stream of air is required in a specific area. The fan is made from Perspex components that snap together, no glue required. The included instructions ensure easy assembly. The fan unit measures 7 inches x 2.8 inches x 3.75 inches.

Trem Solar Powered Ventilator Fan

The Trem is a ventilator fan that reduces moisture and maintains overall environmental temperature. This sort of fan is not well suited to projects that require a direct stream of air, but it is very suitable for projects that demand a constant environmental temperature and moisture regulation. The fan is 8.5 inches wide and 2.75 inches deep. It comes with a nickel cadmium battery/solar cell. When fully charged, the battery will to run the fan up to 48 hours without sunlight.

Like the Trem fan, The SolarVENT is a solar powered ventilator fan. The SolarVENT represents a more sophisticated and more powerful than the Trem model. Not surprisingly, it also costs more. The SolarVENT comes with two high-capacity nickel hydride batteries and a crystalline solar cell. It is also slightly larger than other ventilator fans, measuring 10.5 inches in diameter and 4.92 inches in depth. Like the Trem, the SolaVENT is unsuitable for experiments in which a directed and concentrated flow of air is required. This unit should be used to maintain a constant temperature and humidity level in the experimental environment.

Solar Power Cooler Fan

For budget science projects where a constant environmental temperature is required, the Solar Power cooler fan is ideal. Like the two ventilation fans described above, this device is not suitable for directing a jet of concentrated air onto a specific point of an experiment; instead, it should be used to maintain a cool overall temperature. Designed for use in cars, this fan draws warm air out of a space and replaces it with cooler air from outside. It might not be as effective as the fans mentioned above, but its low price may make it worth considering.
