Artificial family planning allows a couple to decide when the time is right to conceive a child. Depending on the method chosen, the couple can switch methods or combine methods at any time to increase the effectiveness. While some methods, such as a hysterectomy, are not reversable, others, such as the diaphragm, allow the couple to stop using the artificial method at any time.

Pregnancy Spacing

During pregnancy, the body undergoes many changes to accommodate the growing baby. The expecting mother experiences changes such as weight gain, hormonal changes, skin problems and constipation. While the mother's body is changing, so is the body of the foetus. Using artificial planning methods such as condoms and birth control pills allows families to dictate how far apart to plan pregnancies. The time in between pregnancies gives the mother's body a chance to recover from pregnancy and childbirth.

According to ABC News/Health, spacing pregnancies is beneficial to both the mother and baby. Women who have babies too close together or too far apart are at risk of having premature babies or babies with low birth weight. In the same report, Dr. Jacques Moritz, recommends that women who have had smaller babies or growth problems during pregnancy not to get pregnant for at least another six months after giving birth.

Family Size Limits

Artificial family planning allows families to limit their family size. While some families may want many children, others may want only one or two. Certain families may choose not to have any children at all. Most methods, such as condoms, hormone injections and birth control pills, are effective and easily reversible. They allow couples who change their mind to have more children later.

Financial Stability

A person's financial stability determines the person's comfort level in life. The cost of having children begins in pregnancy and extends through the child's life. Artificial family planning allows a couple to develop a financial budget. From the budget, the couple determines how many children to have and how far apart to have them and still live a comfortable life. Raising children is a full-time job in addition to any full-time job outside the home. Those who are financially stable have the option of having one parent stay home while the other works.

Increased Fertility

Artificial family planning methods, such as in vitro fertilisation, helps families who are having difficulty conceiving children. With this method, doctors combine the egg and sperm outside the mother. After insemination, the embryos are implanted in the mother.

This method is performed using the couple's or a donor's eggs or sperm. This method also allows a surrogate mother to carry a child that is genetically related to the couple desiring children. Age is not a limiting factor with this method.
