Decks provide a convenient outdoor living area ideal for hosting small parties, family dinners, or just to sit and enjoy the outdoors. A small yard provides a slight barrier to building a good-sized deck. Having a small yard does not mean you have to use stairs only to exit the house. Decks can be customised to suit any size yard.

Basic Deck

A basic deck does not take up a lot of space. The standards for decking usually call for the deck to be large enough to set up a table while allowing for walking space. Average dimensions would be 8 foot by 12 foot, with the deck being longer than it is deep. The size can be adjusted to meet the needs of the yard, but should be large enough for a seating area if you intend to use the deck as more than a pathway.

Open Front Deck

A deck is walled in by the railings. The only open aspect of the deck, typically, is the stairs. Open up the front of the deck and extend the stairs to cover an entire side or multiple sides. Removing the railing and extending the steps allows you to build a larger deck while making the yard appear larger. The continuity of the yard to the deck gives the appearance of a single unit as opposed to both a deck and a yard.

The deck does not have to be a square structure. A small walkway leading to a deck that curves along the side of the house to the side fence allows for more area to be used without infringing too much on the yard. By curving the outer edge of the deck, you increase the area drastically. The yard remains almost the same size so the dimensions are relatively the same. A railed walkway along the side of the house to the main aspect of the deck with an open-deck leading into the yard further adds to the appearance of size.

A patio is a cement or stone structure that sits on the ground. A small yard with a patio does not seem any smaller due to the patio. A small deck extending out of the back door gives room for people to come in and out of the house without having to fight over stairs. The deck could lead into a ground-floor stone or cement patio where seating areas, grills or other aesthetic elements create the comforting atmosphere. The size of the yard is maintained because there is no break, such as a railing, between the yard and the patio.
