Gantt charts, named after Henry Laurence Gantt, schedule a project by laying out the tasks and time line of each task. While Gantt used the chart to outline the steps of building a ship, many people use the chart today to outline any construction project. The chart allows you to set a time line for the project that is detailed, listing every task and step, or generalised, listing the major steps and phases. After completion, the chart gives you an overview of the construction project and how long it will take to complete.

  1. 1

Organise the construction process into phases chronologically. Segment each phase into a number of tasks. For example, the first phase might be to build the foundation. Break this into the tasks that must be accomplished to finish that phase.

  2. 2

List each phase on the left side of a piece of paper. List each task under the relevant phase in chronological order.

  3. 3

Create three columns across the top of the page. Label them "Start Date," "Duration" and "End Date." Write the appropriate information in these columns next to each phase and task. The phase start and end date corresponds with the start date of the first task and end date of the last task.

  4. 4

Write the month and year the construction projects starts next to the "End Date" column. This forms a fourth column. Directly under the month, write the days of the month. You can use the numbers of the days (1, 2, 3...) or letters to represent days of the week (M, T, W...). The month and year column should extend across all days of the month.

  5. 5

Assign a different colour to each phase. Use that colour to mark off the times on the chart that each task under that phase begins and ends. For example, if a tasks starts on November 3 and ends on November 6, you will draw a horizontal line that lines up with that task and fills in the space between November 3 and November 6.
