In "The Sims 3," like the other games in the series, a Sim can cook a meal for the household. Anyone on the lot can eat the food. This makes the ability to serve food helpful when there's a party going on or guests visiting. Guests, unless they stay overnight, cannot make their own food out of the refrigerator. It's a good idea to make sure a Sim studies cooking from a book long enough to earn two cooking points. This helps prevent a kitchen fire and a burnt meal.

Click on an adult or teenage Sim's avatar.
Click on the refrigerator. Instruct the Sim to prepare a group meal. The types of meals the Sim can make depends on cooking skill and time of day. For example, if it's in the morning, the Sim can only prepare breakfast.
Wait for the Sim to cook the meal. He needs a clear spot on the counter to prepare the food and a stove. Once the food cooks, the Sim takes it to a dining room table.
Click on the plate or bowl of food if it's on the counter and instruct the Sim to serve it. This option appears if there are items on the table or the Sim is interrupted during the serving process.
Click on any of the plates or bowls and call the household to come and eat.
