When visiting a doctor's office or hospital for routine care, procedures or treatment for illnesses, you expect the best for yourself and your family. Unfortunately, care is not always received as planned and you may not have received the privacy and respect you are promised as a patient. When this happens, many individuals are inclined to write complaint letters about the medical services they received. Complaint letters alert doctors and medical management personnel about issues within their facility and how they can work to resolve them.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Address the appropriate authorities. When complaining about a medical service received in a doctor's office, address the specific doctor or the office manager. When complaining about services received in an outpatient or hospital facility, alert the doctor or the head of the department.

  2. 2

Type your letter. A typed letter helps to maintain a sense of professionalism.

  3. 3

Send your letter as soon as possible. So that the event is clear in your mind, write your letter as soon as you are able to.

  4. 4

Stick to the facts. Avoid exaggerating the situation; keep in mind that people's jobs may be on the line if you tell a story rather than just straight facts. Tell exactly what happened, how you felt and what you feel could have been done to prevent you from complaining.

  5. 5

Include as much detail as possible. Include the exact medical services, dates, times, locations and names of staff members involved. Be as precise as possible.

  6. 6

    Leave contact information for follow-up.
