A folded fabric pine cone is a simple project that produces stunning results. The fabric pine cones can be used as decorative accents, in place of real pine cones or even as holiday ornaments or decorations. You can change the appearance of the pine cones with the kind of fabric used. Choose natural coloured fabrics for a more realistic look, or bold coloured fabrics for a more modern style of decorating. These fabric pine cones also work well as gifts.
Cut the fabric into two-inch squares. The easiest way to do this is to cut the fabric into two-inch-wide strips, then cut the strips into squares.
Pin one square to the styrofoam ball by pinning the four corners of the fabric.
Fold the other fabric squares into quarters. If they don't want to stay in quarters, iron the folds with a warm iron.
Place the folded point of the square (the point that is not attached to any raw edges of the fabric) next to the square on the ball. Stick the point about 1/2 inch above the ball and pin the bottom left corner to the ball. Create a circle of squares around the ball, pinning the left edge of the new square and the right edge of the previous square each time.
Make additional rows of squares around the ball until about 1/4 inch of the styrofoam ball remains exposed. Overlap each row by about 1/2 inch. Place the point of each new row between the points of the previous row. If your fingers get sore, use a thimble to push the pins into the ball.
Pin one final square to the bottom of the ball. You can pin the middle only, or pin all four of the corners like you did for the original square.
