When you think of hippies, it is likely that you conjure an image of a bell-bottomed flower child, wearing lots of peace sign insignias. Although the hippie trend is most often associated with the 1970s, modern day hippies are still quite abundant --- just slightly less obvious. They tend to wear fair-trade clothing and accessories made from natural fibres such as hemp. If you want to make hippie jewellery, use hemp twine to create a natural looking necklace. Add beads with peace signs to the necklace for a more obvious message.
- Skill level:
- Moderately Easy
Things you need
- Measuring tape
- Hemp twine
- Peace sign pendant or bead
Measure the neck of the person who will be receiving the necklace. Cut four lengths of hemp to create the necklace: add 6 inches to your measurement for two of the lengths. Make the other two lengths five or six times the length of your measurement.
Tie the four strands of hemp together so that the two longer pieces are on either side and the two shorter pieces are in the centre. Leave about 3 inches of twine extending from the knot. You will use it to tie the necklace when it is finished.
Fold the right strand over the top of the two middle strands, and under the left strand. Then, bring the left strand under the middle strands, and over the right strand. Pull the first knot tight.
Bring the left strand over the middle strings, and under the right strand. Bring the right strand under the middle strings and over the left strand and pull the knot until it is tight.
Repeat steps three and four to the halfway point of the necklace.
Attach a large, peace sign medallion or bead to the necklace. Thread the centre strings through the bead and allow the other two strings to hug the bead on either side. Then continue knotting.
Tie a knot at the end of your necklace and cut the strands so that 3 inches of hemp remain. Braid the stray ends of hemp and secure the braids with small knots. Use the knots to tie the necklace around the wearer's neck.
