Having bright, clear eyes, makes you look well-rested, alert and awake and says a lot about your health and well-being. Some belief that clear eyes make you look younger. The white of your eyes, also known as the sclera, may get red and bloodshot due to a lack of sleep or exposure to irritants such as fog or cigarette smoke. The sclera can also discolour due to medical issues and drug and alcohol abuse.
Catch up on sleep. Insufficient sleep doesn't give your eyes enough time to refresh themselves. Get at least eight hours of sleep at night. Take breaks every hour when sitting behind your computer all day because your eyes may get even more fatigued, inflamed and red from staring at a computer screen.
Consult your doctor to determine whether your eye condition is due to an underlying medical condition. Jaundice, certain cancers and liver disease can all cause yellowing of the white of your eyes. Treat the underlying issue to get rid of the eye discolouration.
Undergo I-Brite surgery. During this eye-whitening surgery the membrane that covers the sclera gets removed along with any discolouration and red veins. A new membrane, free of discolouration or veins grows back. The surgery is painless and takes approximately 20 minutes.
Use over-the-counter prescription eye drops to reduce eye discolouration. Eye drops decrease inflammation, moisturise and brighten your eyes and shrink arteries and veins. Administer eye drops by tilting your head back so you look up toward the ceiling. Open your eyes wide and position the eye dropper to the centre of your eyes. Squeeze one drop into your eye and close it. Blink your eye to distribute the liquid. Repeat the process on your other eye.
Use make-up to reduce the appearance of eye discolouration. Rim your eyes with a bold, dark coloured eyeliner to accentuate them. Draw a line from the inner to the outer corner of your upper and lower eyelid to resemble catlike eyes.
