We have to say goodbye to friends for a variety of reasons. Many of the reasons are positive, such as a new job opportunity, going away to college, or entering into a marriage that requires moving. When the time comes to say goodbye to a friend, a well written goodbye letter provides the opportunity to express your feelings in a personal way. It also allows your friend to keep the letter as a memento of your friendship.

Skill level:

  1. 1

Reflect on your friendship. Make a list of the important things that you treasure about your relationship. The list can include your first meeting; memories of trips taken together; significant conversations during happy and sad times; and other shared experience.Taking the time to reflect helps to generate ideas and trigger memories that could escape you if you simply skip to the writing stage.

  2. 2

Express your appreciation for the friendship and let her know that she is unique and cherished. Include a few specific details from the list you made.

  3. 3

Tell your friend that you are sad to say goodbye but keep the tone of the letter upbeat and positive. Let her know that while you are preparing for a new phase of life without her, your thoughts are bittersweet because you are losing an important part of your life.

  4. 4

End the letter with warm regards and wish her success in her future endeavours. Let her know that you want to see her at some point in the future and that goodbye doesn't have to mean goodbye forever.
