How to Cut Mitres in My Coving

Coving is another term used for crown moulding or the wooden strips that line the top of your walls next to the ceiling. A mitre cut is a 45-degree cut through the end of the coving so you can place two pieces together in a corner and form a 90-degree angle. This allows for a tight seam between the two pieces of moulding. You achieve a mitre cut with an electric mitre saw.

Measure the length of the wall with a tape measure. This tells you how long a piece of coving you need.

Transfer the measurement to the coving and place a mark on the thin edge of the coving to mark the cutting location.

Rotate the front of your mitre saw blade to the left by loosening the hand-screw on the front base of the saw. Pull the handle to the left until the arrow indicator lines up with 45-degrees. Tighten the hand-screw to lock the saw in place.

Place the coving against the fence located on the top of the saw's base. The backside of the coving, the side you fasten against the wall, rests against the fence. Line the pencil mark up in the centre of the slot on the saw's base. This is the slot the saw blade goes into after it cuts the material.

Hold the material against the fence, turn on the saw blade and lower the saw into the material. This creates a 45-degree cut through the face of the coving.

You can adjust these steps to match any angle mitre cut you might need by adjusting the saw blade to the correct number. For example, if you want a 20-degree cut, set the cut at 20.
