Postal money orders are an economical, convenient and safe alternative to sending cash through the mail. You can purchase a postal order from any post office in the United States or from any rural route carrier. Postal orders are available in any amount up to £650. Postal money orders have security features including a special colour blend, a metal security thread, a Benjamin Franklin watermark and double imprinting of the dollar amount.
Go to a post office to purchase the money order. Or you can buy one from a rural route carrier or an authorised highway contract route carrier. Some supermarkets, convenience stores and check cashing stores also sell money orders.
Obtain the "Form 6387" and complete it by providing the required information. You will have to provide the recipient's name and address, and mention the exact amount of money you wish to send. You must make the money order payable to a single identifiable party.
Pay for the money order in U.S. currency. You can also pay with a traveller's check or an ATM/debit card. After you pay for and fill out the form, put the money order in the mail and it will be on its way.
Ask the recipient to take the money order to any U.S. post office or bank. He will be required to sign it in the presence of a USPS employee or bank teller. He will then receive the cash.
If you have to purchase money orders for £1,950 or more in a single day, you will need to provide a current form of government-issued identification with a photo, like a driver's license or state ID card. If your money order is stolen, lost or damaged, contact the United States Postal Inspection Service to have it replaced.
The USPS does not guarantee a 100 per cent refund for a stolen money order if you cannot provide the receipt. If the USPS or bank employee is not satisfied with the form of identification the recipient presents, he may refuse to cash the money order.
