Black pepper mites are another name for the mites that cause scabies, an itchy skin condition caused by the microscopic mites burrowing into the skin. The disease is characterised by red itchy spots in crevices in the body, including between fingers and toes, inside bends of the elbows and knees, and in the genital area. They are difficult to get rid of, and successful treatment of the disease depends on strict sanitation procedures.

Instructions

  1. 1

Talk to a doctor or dermatologist if you suspect you may have the disease. A medical professional can prescribe an acaricide that will kill the mites. Do not try to treat with over-the-counter products. Mites are not insects, so they are not affected by most commonly available insecticides.

  2. 2

Wash clothes and bedding in hot water. Temperatures in excess of 120 Fahrenheit will kill the mites and their eggs.

  3. 3

Dry clothes in a dryer on high heat for at least 10 minutes.

  4. 4

Pack clothes in sealed plastic bags for at least five days. The scabies mites cannot live longer than three to five days away from their host.

Tips and warnings

  • Scabies is extremely infectious. All the people who live in close contact with the infected person should follow the prevention procedures to avoid passing the mites back and forth.
