ASUS is among the largest PC motherboard manufacturers in the world. The ASUS P5Q PRO motherboard, released in 2008, features support for 64-bit operating systems and advanced hardware components. The BIOS, also known as the Basic Input/Output System, is upgradeable software that is built in to the motherboard. Improperly upgrading, or flashing, an ASUS P5Q PRO BIOS can result in an unbootable computer, in which case you will have to recover it to use the ASUS P5Q PRO motherboard again.

Instructions

  1. 1

Download the ASUS P5Q PRO BIOS upgrade files, and copy them onto a thumb drive or floppy drive. Click "Download" and then click "External Mirror 1" to download the upgrade files, and then drag the files into the correct drive.

  2. 2

Turn off the computer containing the ASUS P5Q PRO motherboard.

  3. 3

Remove the power cable leading to the back of the computer casing to ensure that no power flows through to the motherboard.

  4. 4

Remove the screws that hold the cover of the computer casing in place. Usually, there are two or three screws to remove with a Phillips screwdriver. Slide open the cover.

  5. 5

Locate the blue-coloured CLEAR RTC jumper between the two PCI slots on the ASUS P5Q PRO motherboard. Light up the interior of the computer casing with a flashlight or any other light source if you find it hard to see properly. The CLEAR RTC jumper cap is attached by default to pin 1 and pin 2 of the jumper.

  6. 6

Remove the CLEAR RTC jumper cap by pulling on it gently.

  7. 7

Reattach the jumper cap to pin 2 and pin 3 of the CLEAR RTC jumper.

  8. 8

Close the computer casing and plug the power cable back into the computer. Closing the case first is a safer option than plugging in the power while the case is open.

  9. 9

Insert the floppy disk or thumb drive containing the ASUS P5Q PRO BIOS upgrade and turn on the computer, which will automatically start to recover the BIOS. A notification will pop up to tell you that the ASUS P5Q PRO BIOS has been recovered successfully.

  10. 10

Turn off the computer, disconnect it from any power source and open the cover of the computer casing again. Attach the CLEAR RTC jumper cap to pin 1 and pin 2 of the jumper CLEAR RTC. Close the cover of the computer casing, reattach the power cable and turn on the computer to boot into any installed operating system.
