Problems with running games on a computer, whether the game is online or downloaded onto the hard drive, often stem from the computer's video card driver or other software not being recent enough to support the game's requirements. Fortunately, Big Fish's online games should only require one or a few downloads, or adjustments to graphic settings, to update the system in order for its games to run smoothly.

Update the video card. Under the Start menu, enter "dxdiag" into the search box. This will open the Direct X diagnostic tool. Users with a 32-bit system should click "Save All Information," while 64-bit system users should click "Run 64-bit dxdiag." Save this report to your desktop. With the information included in this diagnostic, update the driver. Compaq, Dell and HP users can visit their manufacturer's website, while users of other brands of computer should check the website for the video card manufacturer. The name of this manufacturer is included in the diagnostic.

  2. 2

Run the game in XP compatibility mode. In the Start menu, select "Computer," then "Local Disk (C:)," then "Program Files." Windows 64-bit systems users should select "Program Files (x86)." Locate the folder for the Big Fish game and open it. Click "Organize" then "Folder" and "Search Options." Open the View tab, then click "Show Hidden Files" and "Folders." Click "OK." The .exe file for the game is now visible. Right-click this file and select "Properties." Open the Compatibility tab and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)." Check the boxes labelled "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition," then check "Run this program as an administrator." Delete the shortcut icon for the game, probably on the desktop, as it will not function in XP compatibility mode. Use the Game Manager and click "Play Now" to play the game.

  3. 3

Disable Aero, the standard appearance setting for Vista. Right-click on the desktop and select "Personalize" from the menu. Click "Window Color and Appearance," then "Open classic appearance properties" for more colour options. Choose "Windows Vista Basic" for the colour scheme and click "OK." This frees up more memory for the game to run smoothly.

  4. 4

If these steps do not resolve the program, reinstall the game. Open the Game Manager then click the dustbin icon next to the game name. Reinstall the game by going to Big Fish's website and opening "My Account" then "My Purchase History" then clicking "Install Now" next to the game name.
