How to Use Salt to Kill Weeds

Updated July 20, 2017

You can effectively use salt, or a saltwater solution, to kill weeds around your house. This is because salt prevents weeds (and plants) from absorbing water, causing them to dry up and die. Always use caution when using salt to kill weeds. Too much salt can kill other plants in the area or prevent plants from ever growing back.

Mix 1 cup of salt into 2 cups of boiling water. After this solution has cooled, pour it into a spray bottle. Then spray it on the weeds you want to kill.

Spray a second time a few days later if the weeds are still thriving, or if it has rained. After several rains, the water will dilute the salt and you will be able to grow other desirable plants in the area.

Use a large amount of salt, or salt water, on areas that you do not want any weeds (or plants) to grow in. This might include a gravel driveway or cracks in your sidewalk.
