Maintaining a 1998 Kawasaki ZX-6R can be a challenging task for a new motorcycle owner, many of which are unfamiliar with the seemingly complex workings of their machine. To simplify the task, a 1998 ZX-6R uses an easily removable brake pad retaining pin on all three of its brake calipers, allowing the brake pads to be released with very little fuss.

Things you need
- Socket wrench
- 14-mm hex socket
- 6-mm Allen socket
- Bungee cord
- Needle-nose pliers
Unbolt the brake caliper from the front fork or rear swingarm, using a socket wrench. Use a 14-mm hex socket to unscrew the front caliper bolts, and a 6-mm Allen socket for the rear caliper.
Slide the caliper off the brake rotor. Suspend the caliper from the handlebars or frame, if needed, using a bungee cord.
Pull the hair clip pin out of the brake pad's retaining pin on the outside face of the caliper using a pair of needle-nose pliers. Push the retaining pin out of the back of the caliper with your finger.
Pull the brake pads and their spring clip out of the caliper. Retain the spring clip, and discard the brake pads.
Reinstall the brake calipers, following the reverse method of removal.
Tips and warnings
- Refer to an official Kawasaki service manual for detailed information, including torque specifications and installation or removal procedures.
- Use a large slotted screwdriver to retract the caliper's pistons, if needed, before reinstalling the calipers. Insert the screwdriver's tip between the brake pads, and push them back until the pistons retract.
- Don't allow your calipers to hang by the brake lines; this will put undue strain on the hoses and may cause leaks or air infiltration that will lead to loss of braking capabilities.
