How to Convert the Square Meter

Updated February 21, 2017

A square meter is a unit used by the international metric system to measure areas. However, other units such as square yards, square feet or acres are commonly used in the United States to express the size of an area. Use a calculator or available online unit converters to convert a square meter value.

Multiply the length by the width to calculate the area in square meters. For example, if a field measures 120 by 80 meters, its area is 120 * 80 = 9,600 square meters.

Multiply square meters by 10.7639 to compute the area in square feet. In our example, 9,600 * 10.7639 = 103,333.44 square feet.

Multiply square meters by 1.19599 to convert the area size to square yards. In the example, 9,600 * 1.196 = 11481.6 square yards.

Multiply square meters by 0.000247 to calculate the area in acres. In the example, 9,600 * 0.000247 = 2.37 acres.

Navigate to an online unit converter, using any Web browser on your computer.

Enter the area size in the box "From" or something similar to indicate the initial measurement and choose the units "square meters." For example, enter the value of 450.

Select desirable units--"square yards," for example--in the box "To," or the equivalent, and read the converted value. In this example, 450 square meters correspond to 538.195521 square yards.
