How to Convert From a USB 1.0 to a USB 2.0

When you look at your old Universal Serial Bus port and compare it with a 2.0 compatible port, you may not see any differences. However, a USB 2.0 port transfers data up to 40 times faster than a USB 1.0 port. If you want to upgrade to USB 2.0 speeds, you can install the necessary equipment to give you the USB speeds that you are looking for.

Power off your computer. Remove the battery from the back of the machine, and unplug the AC power cable as well.

Remove the screws that hold your computer's casing, and turn it on its side. You will usually have two or four screws on either side of the back panel. Slide the cover panel forward after removing the casing screws to access the inside of the computer.

Remove one of the metal plates that are covering the PCI slots. Remove the screw holding it in place, and pull it up to slide it out of place.

Slide the USB 2.0 adaptor card into place in the PCI slot. Make certain that the USB connections are facing out the back of the computer. You may need to use a minor amount of pressure, but do not force it into place. When the connection is secure, continue onto the next step.

Replace the computer casing, screws and reconnect the battery/AC cable. Restart your computer.

Insert the USB 2.0 adaptor card driver CD into your optical disc drive and follow the prompts that appear to install the software. When the drivers are finish installing, you will be able to use your new USB 2.0 ports.


Buy a USB 2.0 adaptor card that is compatible with your computer. If you are not sure about what your motherboard will be able to support, contact the motherboard manufacturer's website or the operation manual.


Always ground yourself by touching an unpainted metal object or by wearing an anti-static wristband before working inside of your computer. Static electricity can affect the internal components of your computer.
