The most important part of any asphalt paving job is determining how much asphalt you will need in order to pave the section. To determine this, you must first calculate the area that will be paved. In most cases, the area will be a square or other straight angle, making the calculation simple. However, in the case of a cul-de-sac or other curved areas, the calculations will be a bit more complicated.
Use a tape measure to measure the length of the area you want to pave with asphalt. Write down the number.
Use a tape measure to measure the width of the area you want to pave with asphalt. Write down the number.
Multiply the length times the width. For example, if the length is 4 meters and the width is 6 meters, you will multiply 4 times 6 to get 24 meters. This is the amount of area you will need to pave with asphalt.
Use a tape measure to find the diameter of the circle that is being paved. The diameter is the distance from one side of the circle to the other, and it must pass through the centre of the circle. In our example, the diameter will be 6 meters.
Square the diameter that is found. In our example, that means multiplying 6 times 6 to get 36.
Divide it by 4. In our example, that means divided 36 by 4 to get 9.
Multiply the number by Pi, which can be shortened to 3.14. In our example, that is 9 times 3.14 which equals 28.26 meters. That is the area that will be paved with asphalt in a circle with a diameter of 6 meters.
For areas that are unique or odd, you might want to split up the area that is being paved into sections (for example, a section that is a square and a section that is a circle) and then add the areas together to find the total area. If you are measuring triangles or half-circles, perform the same steps as above and then divide the total area by 2 in order to determine the area needed.
