You may notice messages appearing on the odometer display of your Volvo S40. These messages may include "Stop Safely" or "Service Required." These messages prevent you from viewing your S40's normal odometer display. You can reset the message indicator by acknowledging these messages. Once the system realises you have read the messages, they will go away; the system will reset, and the odometer will return to normal.

  1. 1

Crank your S40's engine. Look at the odometer to verify that the message indicator is on.

  2. 2

Examine your turn signal stalk on the left side of the steering column. Inspect the end of the stalk. You'll see a button labelled "Read."

  3. 3

Press the "Read" button repeatedly until the message indicator clears. At this point, the odometer should display your trip mileage or your total vehicle mileage. The message indicator is now reset.
