How to Calculate Land Acreage
The area of a piece of land is measured in acres. (field image by Sergey Galushko from

An acre is a standard measurement of land area used to describe the size of everything from private housing plots to a ranch or farmland. A house plot for a single-family home towns typically ranges from 0.25 acre to 1 acre. Farm fields laid out in the pre-mechanical farming era typically consist of 20 to 30 acres. Modern ranches and farms may comprise fields and pastures with much higher acreage.

  1. 1

Determine the width in feet of the piece of land you are measuring. This can be done by walking a measuring wheel along the edge of the land, or by taking measurements from maps if the land has been previously surveyed. If measurements are in yards, multiply by three to obtain the measurement in feet.

  2. 2

Determine the length of the land parcel, using either a map or a measuring wheel as explained above. If measurements are in miles, multiply the number of miles by 5,280 to obtain the measurement in feet. Write down the length and width measurements of the land in feet.

  3. 3

Multiply the length by the width and write down the result. Divide that number by 43,560 (the number of square feet in an acre). The result will be the acreage of your land parcel.

Tips and warnings

  • The directions above assume that the land is shaped in a square or rectangle. For an unevenly shaped piece of land, first subdivide the plot into multiple rectangles, and squares and then determine the square footage of each. Add together the square footage of each and divide by 43,560 to calculate the overall acreage.
